BEYOND SPECIALTY

OUR PURPOSE

Our purpose is to epitomise the Triple Bottom Line* business model within the coffee industry demonstrating that balancing financial performance with social and environmental responsibility drives resilience and long-term success, while contributing to a more sustainable global coffee industry.

We showcase the very best of coffee, in every way. Coffee matters. In the UK alone, around 95 million cups are drunk every day. It is one of the most traded and valuable crops globally providing livelihoods for 125 million people, from smallholder farmers to those along the supply-chain, to the workers brewing and serving it each day in the World’s coffee shops. • Green Coffee Sourcing

Green coffee accounts for over 70% of our total purchasing; it is the heart of our business.

We buy tons of coffee each year, the majority through long-standing relationships with a group of around eighteen amazing producer cooperatives and family-run farms.

These are mutually beneficial partnerships; 99% of our coffee buying is agreed through forward-contracts, providing the certainty and trust that enables our partners to invest in their farms and communities, and secures us the quality and supply security for our customers.

  • Circular Economy

We believe that there is an opportunity in the coffee industry to change how things are done. We have embraced circular economy principles in our operations, from our packaging to our on-site waste, and the way in which we deliver coffee.

All of our food service, and soon our retail, packaging is now made using home-compostable material, with an industrially compostable valve (the best available for now).

Our coffee bags can be ripped up and put in the garden compost. Our wholesale re-usable, returnable containers are a big success, with more than thirty of our coffee-shop customers switching from single use packaging as part of our weekly delivery runs and collections.

  • Giving Back

We are committed to giving back to the communities we connect with, both locally, in and around Huddersfield, as well as globally, supporting people and the environment within coffee-growing regions.
We donate at least 2% of our annual turnover to charities and community groups.

We run a local community grants program providing support to small grass-roots charities and groups in and around Huddersfield.

Over the last two years, we have provided almost £30,000 in small grants to local groups, which has been used to fund a wide range of activities from warm spaces and hot meals during winter months, to forest schools, mental-health support and buying equipment for the local mountain rescue team. We provide annual larger donations to our local community food bank and some cultural events.

Internationally, since 2022, we have funded the running of a childrens home and orphanage in the town of Bensa, in southern Ethiopia, in partnership with colleagues and friends at Ardent Coffee from Ethiopia. The Children’s home provides a caring, safe home and education for around 30 children from the community who have sadly lost their parents.

We are long-time supporters of World Coffee Research, an international science charity that is mapping the DNA of coffee plants and helping to introduce more climate-change resilient plant varieties for the future. The impacts of climate change are devastating the coffee harvests of many countries, causing hardship for farming communities and disrupting global supply chains.
